Second Hand is First Hand in my Book!

October 28, 2008

I recently watched a segment on the news where charitable stores or second hand stores are seeing an increase in traffic due to the economy. Why is that? I shop these places regardless of the economy – I guess that is why all of my friends call me a tightwad or frugal. Well, I have found some nice things at 1/4 of the cost at our local Goodwill store (it helps that it is within walking distance of my work). There are two ways to shop Goodwill – you can click on the link below to go to their online shopping – they charge a flat 7.99 for shipping so it does work out very reasonable.

Or find a store near you by clicking here. Either way, I believe you will be pleasantly surprised.

Key notes – don’t just go one time – go on different days, get to know the sales people, ask them when the best time to shop, if you are looking for something in particular, ask if they will call you if something comes in that matches your request. My store is AWESOME – right now we are looking for two chest of drawers or a large bureau since ours was ruined when our upstairs toilet overflowed (long story). We are PATIENTLY waiting to see what shows up – the key to shopping these stores is patience – don’t expect it to be there on your first or second trip but when you do find it it is like finding a lost treasure! So, what are you waiting for? Go check it out – and don’t forget to donate back to the Goodwill – it not only helps the economy, your pocketbook but helps keep prices low!
