Baby, it’s Coooold outside!

We are smack dab in the middle of the biggest snow/ice storm of the new year! I worked from home today – AMAZING how much you can get done working at home! I got several items cleaned off my list because I was not interrupted.

Anyway, it is terribly cold and it is still snicing (like the word – I made that one up) it’s when it looks like snow but it has a little ice mixed in – we are scheduled to get 6-8 inches.

Snow, I like it but can do without the ice – I broke my pelvis 2 years ago and ice just scares me – one fall and I’ll break it again! So, when ice is involved, Nancy works from home.

Snow is good for our crops, it brings nitrogen down to the ground and as the snow melts the ground is saturated with water at a slow rate – we want the ground to soak up the water but not to the point that it can’t take anymore. Hay season is just around the corner (4 short months) and winter weather can either make or break a crop – remember the drought – we were scrounging for hay and it was like gas – it kept climbing. Hay has now settled back down and I hope we have a good season like we did the past season.

Wyatt loves to play in the snow as does Maestro – they both go out and shove their faces down into the snow and come up with snow masks! Niki, Thor, and Duke on the other hand do not care so much for the snow.

We are prepared should this last front coming through knock power out – we have our Kerosene heaters filled and 5 gallons of fuel in reserve. We have our generator ready to go for the refrigerator and freezer. We have a wind up alarm clock, flashlights, and a propane cook stove with three cannisters of propane. We have 5 gallons of water, and our pantry is stocked (not fully but will take care of us for at least a week if needed). In addition, we have $money$ in the safe and our gas tanks are full. We also have a battery powered weather radio and our cell phones are fully charged.

How are you doing in your neck of the woods?
