We Saved $600.00 Dollars!

We were in dire need of a new couch. When I broke my pelvis, James pulled out our very old couch and actually recycled it by giving it away and put together an antique twin bed frame with mattress since I was unable to climb upstairs. This has been our “couch” now for about 2 years.

We have been discussing the possibility of getting a new couch – we had discussed recliners but decided on a couch with recliners! Well, have you priced a brand new couch with recliners at both ends? I about went into a Frugal coma at the thought of parting with that much money. Surely there had to be a better way of acquiring a couch with recliners.

Bear and I hunted HIGH and LOW for a couch that we both agreed upon. Too Dirty, broken, uncomfortable – I thought we would never find one!

Well Friday, I was waiting on Bear to pick me up and just ran out to Craigslist to see what they had to offer. I about fell right off my chair – there she was in all her used beauty – a Lazy boy couch with recliners at both ends and was she pretty. I looked at the price and thought now that’s what I am talking about! I called and they still had it and we arranged for pick-up on Sunday morning! I printed the page out for Bear to see and he liked it to so it was definitely a go – it was going to be a go anyway but it’s was good that he liked it too!

Sunday came around and I could barely contain myself as we made the arrangements and I got the directions to their house where our new to us couch awaited us. I paid for the couch and the gentleman was kind enough to help Bear out the door with it. It was, for lack of better words, a bear to get out! We loaded her up and proceeded to head on over to the house. We arrived at the house and finished the last details to making room for the couch and began the ordeal of getting her out of the truck, up the steps, up another set of steps, and in the house. I helped up to the porch but the darn thing was so bulky and heavy and I just couldn’t quite make it. That is when it is great to have some AWESOME Neighbors – Glen saw the struggle I was having and came over to assist. Once we got her in the kitchen Bear found out that the back of the couch came off in three sections to make it easier to move! Now we find this out. With the backs off the couch, I was able to get it on into the front room. And I’m happy to say that the couch looks great and it is so comfortable to be able to sit and get your feet up. I actually fell asleep that night after we got back from the barn watching the news!

Now, how did I save $600.00? Well, I had set aside $750.00 for a new couch if my hunting could not find a used one to our satisfaction. This was set aside by contributing $75.00 every two weeks for 5 months to fund the couch purchase. During this time I have been on the hunt for a used couch that would be much more reasonable and not send me into a Frugal coma. I hunted Craigslist, Local newspapers, thrift stores and put the word out at work that I was searching for a couch. I found the couch on Craigslist and jumped on it – you have to act fast on craigslist as things move in and out so fast. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t find it on your first pass through – keep working on it as things get added minute by minute.

How I saved $600.00 is that I was able to purchase this almost new couch (name brand) with recliners in it for $130.00! I was able to save the other $620.00. This is almost the exact amount I will need to get my car tags, title and pay taxes!

Now, had we just said, we need a new couch let’s go get one and not shopped around we would actually be out $620.00 because we did not look to used first.

Here is the Couch waiting to be taken into the house – I love my truck – that couch just slid right in and I love my new couch!

And here is the new couch in the house – perfect fit!

Wow! it’s beautiful. It looks like it belongs there. And I love the “frugal coma.” I’m glad that it has a name. Thank you for the frugal pep talk, it really did lift my spirits.

Awesome deal! I am in need of a couch but didn’t have as much luck on Craigslist – you gave me motivation to try again.

So sorry to hear about your broken pelvis. I broke mine in four places. That was the worst pain I have ever felt. I hope you heal fast if you aren’t already.

Hi Sandra, Thanks for the comment and visitin’ us here at the ranch! It takes some time on craigslist but if you have patience and don’t get in a hurry it pays off.

I broke my pelvis and broke the sacrum from my pelvis in 1/07 in a horse accident. I’m, according to the doctor, healed but I still have problems but it is better. I’m back to riding and that is a good thing! Take care and stop by again!

SonyaAnn, Thanks for visitin’ the ranch – What would the YaYa Sisterhood of the Blog be if we didn’t help our fellow sisters out now and again. I’m sure that I’m going to hit a bump in the road and get down and you’ll be there to pep talk me out of it! That is what friends are for! Bear seems to think I stay in a frugal coma all the time!
