Ask the Trainer…….

April 19, 2010

Based on the Poll, readers want to ask questions which will have answers posted in a separate post and also a training post so here is what I am going to do. This post is the Ask the Trainer post – it will be available for 1 week – I will post a link on my sidebar. Ask your question in the comments section and I will answer that question in a separate post the following week. I will also include a small training post with the answers.

I am a professional dog trainer and specialize in working with behavior modification. I train my own dogs in Search and Recovery (see Wyatt’s story on the left sidebar). I am AKC certfied as a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Duke is currently in training to fill some relatively big shoes that Wyatt left behind but I see so much potential in this guy.

Here are the rules for Ask a Trainer:

1. Please ask your question, giving as much detail as you can – the more information I have the better I will be able to answer your question. Please leave me a way to contact you should I need to ask you more questions before answering.

2. Please do not try to answer another person’s post – this can get confusing to the person asking and for me trying to filter the questions.

I will post the question with the answer the following week – the post will be Answers from the Trainer. I hope I get enough participation to make this a valid weekly posting.

Ask away!

I am in the process of getting approved for a PSD (Psychiatric Service Dog). I live way outside the city, and it will be very hard to get to a training class. I want to make sure that my new dog, is a good canine. Could you recommend a good training book, or dvd, so that I can train at home?

    Thanks so much.

Oh – I also wanted to ask how you feel about using choke collars during training? I took my two older dogs (when they were young) to basic obedience training and they insisted that choke collars be used. My poor little pug, had his first trachea collapse, as a result…so I've never used them since.
    Your thoughts?

I own a pom mixed with minature american escamo. He jumps on people all the time and barks uncontrollably when someone rings the door bell also he has bitten 4 people (2kids) drawing blood because they had been in his face…I would like all of these behaviors to stop…considering getting rid of him if he bites again
